Shaman is the story of Loon, a young man who comes of age thirty-two thousand years ago, in the paleolithic era. At the beginning of the book, he is stripped naked, pushed out into the rain and told not to come back for two weeks/5.
SHAMAN is a good book. It could have been a great book, and Robinson is certainly capable of great books. The novel really provides insight into Ice Age living and lures readers down deep into minute details about land and weather and hunter/gatherer culture.
The science is. A story of sacred Indian rites and the land-greed of an expanding new was a time of bloody confrontation between the white man and the red man, a time when the pioneers of a new nation were pushing out across the Great Plains and yet the powerful spirits of an ancient mystical religion still held sway over the Indians.

Shaman is his 16th novel, and it departs from his usual penchant for imagining the future to take up the equally difficult task of recreating the far-distant past.

Shaman. Written by Kim Stanley Robinson Review by Barry Webb. Billed as a coming-of-age story years ago during the height of the Ice Age, the novel follows the life of a shaman-in-training named Loon from his initiation-by-wandering-alone to adulthood, fatherhood, and his achievement of full shaman status several years later.
However, the good bits are so good that I felt they justified a high rating for the novel as a whole. "Shaman" is structured as a classic coming-of-age story: the character coming of age in this case being Loon, a teenager who is being trained as a shaman, mostly against his wishes, for his Ice Age tribe/5(13).
Loon’s inaugural wander is one of the most memorable sections of Shaman, certainly, but there’s plenty of Robinson’s new novel left to recommend yet. What follows is an affectionate account.
With David Drake he has written six popular novels in the Belisarius alternate Roman history series, and with David Weber collaborated on and The Baltic War, as well as the Honorverse series entry Cauldron of Ghosts. Flint's latest Ring of Fire novel is The Polish Maelstrom.
